Hello Scott. I just found your site and your pictures are beautiful. I have a question (you might hear this kind of thing a lot)-My husband and son are on the Table of Contents page of the newest Ensign (Nov 2011) and I would love to know if it's possible to get a print of that picture. I'm not even sure which photographer took it but maybe you do? We were so touched that they were selected (on the first page no less!) and would love to be able to frame the picture. I am so grateful for all the photographers who spend so much of their time creating these beautiful images that accompany the conference talks every six months. Thank you!

The cover is custom, I found some lightweight nylon and sewed it together. It works great and it's light enough that I just keep in in the coroplast tailbox I made for the trike. As far as tires, I'm using schwable marathons up front now, and a marathon plus in the back. I also have a schwable studded tire for the rear wheel only. Most of the time the roads I ride are plowed and dry. If it gets really bad and the snow is just packed down on the road for a while, I throw on the studded tire. I didn't even put the studded tire on last winter. The trike is so stable though that you really don't need the studs until you are going uphill and start spinning out. If i get caught off guard and don't have the studded tire on, I can also turn on the 3 wheel drive and use my hands to drive the front wheels like a wheel chair. It's slow going but works when you are stuck. If you are going up a lot of steep hills in the snow, that would not be fun.

I have a Greenspeed GTO with good summer tires - what tires are you using for winter? I can't imagine what I currently have would get much traction... Also, where did you get the cover?
Thanks,
joe

WOW... Is this a good time to tell you that you're my hero? THIS is EXACTLY what I wanted to do - pedal to work in winter!!!

I used to enjoy pedalling, but yes, middle age has left me way to numb in some very sensitive areas far too often, so I had to resort to a mechanised version of transport... see attached website.

You have given me hope. Now I am definitely going to try using a recumbent trike in winter ;) THANKS!!!

Hi Dan,

I wish I had kept better records so that I had some kind of scientific evidence that my average speed had increased, but reducing drag wasn't my top priority when I built the box. I mostly built it to be somewhat waterproof, with decent cargo space so that I could get my gear to work dry and not drag in wet panniers to my desk. Anyway, I really do think I saw a gain of 2-3 mph, but it's hard to tell for sure. I only commute 6 miles, so it has maybe improved my times by a few minutes over that short distance. That being said, my ride time can vary from 17-30 minutes just depending on if I have a strong tailwind or headwind. If I were going to build it just for drag reduction, I would probably build it a little lighter and less rigid and maybe a little taller to fill the gap behind my shoulders and head.

The only drawback to it is that it adds a couple more pounds to push uphill, but if you aren't spending most of your time climbing, it should help on the rest of the ride.

Good luck!

Hi Scott,
Nice write-up on the trike tail box, thanks! I have an Actionbent (TW Bent) Alum Trike and will be riding an MS150 event this summer on it. I've done this before on the trike & loved it. This year, however, I'm going for my first century. I want to add a tailbox to the trike, following the same process as you. I've done this for my EZ1 in the past, and have coroplast in hand.

My big question is, did you notice any aerodynamic gains? Avg speed gains? Since you're commuting, I figured you might notice more than a wkd rider.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Happy Trails,
Dan in Ohio

Kent, we can go riding any time I'm in St George. That should be at least every six months when I come down for my dental check ups. Please finish school soon. <3 Scott

Maybe when I move back to St. George you can come visit every weekend and we can bike together? I've be to the same place you took those pictures and there are some wicked blind drops there. It would be lots of fun.
